ファイルをアップロードする際のエラー

[edit]

JPN yuki (talk) 08:12, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

I used Google Translate to understand the posting and I'll also use it to translate my answer back into Japanese.
I think that there's a mismatch between the visible file extension and what is actually coded into the byte data. You may use the en:VLC media player and check the codec informations (Tools menu - Codec information on the English GUI) to see for sure what's happening. In any case, you will need to recode your file into e.g. OGA Vorbis or actual MP3, see also Commons:File types#Sound.
Grand-Duc (talk) 12:30, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
「MP3 uploads have been disabled by default, due to concerns about copyright. If you have read and understand our licensing policy and our project scope, you may request permission at Commons:Requests for rights#Autopatrol.
In case you aren't sure if your upload is constructive, it's best to ask for help at the help desk.」
と言われました.「Commons:Requests for rights#Autopatrol」のページに進んだのですが、リクエストを記入する欄が見つかりません.このまま無視してアップロードしてもいいのでしょうか.度々になってすみません. JPN yuki (talk) 09:20, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yasu (talk) 14:58, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
ありがとうございます.それでは、ファイルのアップロードはフォーマットの変換について勉強してからまた考えようと思います. JPN yuki (talk) 07:02, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

How to create GeoJSON .map files?

[edit]

I have created a GeoJSON .map to be used in an article I recently created. However, I cannot figure out how I am supposed to create it here on Commons. The MediaWiki help page says simply to "create" the page with the Data:FILENAME.map syntax. But when I type that into the search field, it simply returns search results saying nothing was found with no option to create that page.

What am I missing? I was able to do this on my own five years ago ... that way, I think, but it's been so long I can't remember. Daniel Case (talk) 19:30, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Go to Data:YOUR TITLE HERE.map. Click Create. Either paste the contents or start typing. - Jmabel ! talk 22:15, 27 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! But it should be possible to do with a link from the search results page, as well. Daniel Case (talk) 03:19, 29 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
For me, Special:Search does offer to create the page. Which search do you have selected in your preferences? Are you defaulting to a different search?
You can also always just build the canonical URL: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data:YOUR_TITLE_HERE.map . - Jmabel ! talk 05:41, 29 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have been wanting to do this too. I want to do it for the provinces of Japan. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 05:43, 29 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

So, i was minding my own buisiness, setting a file for deletion because it was from a copyrighted source, but then people defended it! even though the file had many operations done of it (like the artifact dots removed, stitched together and colour- adjusted) people thought that the copyright was bogus! even if the changes were even less, copyright is still copyright and it should be respected. (the thread is here Commons:Deletion requests/File:Valhalla crater on Callisto.jpg ) also, yann randomly tried to add an "invalid source" tag to one of my files (not the previous one) even though the source was RIGHT THERE!!! https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Valhalla_Callisto_VGR1.png&diff=prev&oldid=1154750838 also, he randomly changed the tag for this file File:Triton True Color.png from cc by 4.0 to nasa file!!! i made adjustments!!! THIS IS VANDALISM!!! and because he is an admin on wikimedia commons, he is getting no punishment! sorry im just mad ok bye Anonymsiy (talk) 07:34, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Image Upload Flagged for Abuse

[edit]

Hello,

My recent attempted upload has been flagged for abuse, which I believe to be in error (though understandable), and I am also unable to file a report in response to this action.

I believe the image I created is a healthy expression of opposition to the fascism of the United States government and the violent acts perpetrated by ICE in its interests.

Please let me know if I can provide further info, and more is below.

Thank you.

Below is the response I attempted to submit:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Beware_of_ICE.png&redirect=no&action=edit&redlink=1 https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Beware_of_ICE_01.svg&redirect=no&action=edit&redlink=1

Description of action and reason for flagging:

Attempting to upload a satirical anti-ICE image. LT 257, 257a, which are not publicly available. It also cited no confirmed email, but I have since confirmed and had a separate upload complete successfully.

Other info:

I suspect this may have something to do with the image containing depictions of swastikas that are clearly suggestive of the fascist nature of ICE. TrevorSalmon (talk) 20:56, 29 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

I've nominated File:Porter & Pretti & Good. Ice Murders Name List.png for deletion.
@TrevorSalmon: thanks for trying to contribute to the project, but please familiarize yourself with COM:SCOPE before uploading further files. - Jmabel ! talk 00:45, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
The filter is unrelated to the issue(s) posited. While your edits were not the intended target, that they were disallowed appears fortuitous, as they were not appropriate for the Commons (or likely any WMF project). The Commons is a file repository for in-scope media, not a soapbox. No filter adjustment or user whitelisting needed at this time. Эlcobbola talk 14:59, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah, thank you for the info. I very much misunderstood the scope and should have given the page a closer read. Thank you all for your hard work! TrevorSalmon (talk) 19:21, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Photo file sizes

[edit]

What is the minimum and maximum size for a photo to be used in an article on wikipedia? Both file sizes and pixels would be helpful since the instructions I read on wiki were not. Thank you. Emanresu0 (talk) 23:34, 29 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Emanresu0: Hi, There is no minimum or maximum. But please always upload the image in its original resolution. Then cropping can be done with [1]. The software MediaWiki takes care of resizing whenever it is needed. Please see Commons:First steps/Reuse#Embedding Commons media in Wikimedia projects for details. Yann (talk) 23:45, 29 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Your reply makes it so much easier than wading through all the instructions. Is there anything I need to do to be sure the photos do not get published until I am ready to publish the article that I am working on in my Sandbox? I want to be sure I see what the entire article will appear like, with the photos, before I publish it. It sounds like uploading it to the Commons makes it immediately public. Emanresu0 (talk) 00:29, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Emanresu0: Anything you upload to Commons is immediately public and may be reused by anyone, not just your particular Wikipedia article. - Jmabel ! talk 00:48, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Emanresu0, if you need to make minor adjustments to a photo after uploading (for example crop it a little more) you can overwrite the file. You can also just upload more files. There is no requirement to insert all the photos you upload in your article. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:01, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

How do I upload photos to my Sandbox or elsewhere so that they are NOT published until I am ready to publish the article that will include the photos? Emanresu0 (talk) 01:37, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Emanresu0: Sorry, you can't do that here.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 04:00, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Emanresu0: I suspect from the question that you have some misconceptions about how Wikimedia projects work. You should probably read Commons:Ownership of pages and files. It probably won't address all of this, but it may give you some good clues. - Jmabel ! talk 05:33, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
I know that anything in a published Article on wiki is free to all. I was hoping that I could put the entire article together in my Sandbox, including its accompanying images, before moving it to publication on wiki. Apparently, not. Too bad for those of us who prefer to publish a high quality article initially, rather than seriatum. Yes, I am a novice on wiki, and it is taking a very long time to work through the process. I appreciate your help. Emanresu0 (talk) 23:42, 2 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I uploaded photos for an article and had the photographer give consent. She indicated she gave consent, but I just recently got notified the photographs were deleted with the following description: Removing photo name.jpg; it has been deleted from Commons by Krd because: No ticket permission since 27 December 2025. How does the photographer give consent to use the photos now? Kstrine320 (talk) 20:17, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Kstrine320, I have had a similar issue as you before. You can leave a comment at Commons:Volunteer Response Team/Noticeboard and let them know about the ticket you had opened for the photos. Hope this helps! Surayeproject3 (talk) 21:39, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Kstrine320: when you say, "She indicated she gave consent," do you mean she already went through the COM:VRT process, or that she just orally said it was OK, or what? - Jmabel ! talk 23:48, 30 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel: She indicated she completed the wizard to provide consent. Evidently, something went wrong, though. Now, if I try to upload the photos again, I get an error message telling me the photos already exist, and that I shouldn't upload them again. It gives me the option to request the photo to be undeleted. Do I need to do that, and then, if they approve the request, have the photographer try to give consent again? Kstrine320 (talk) 01:55, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Please do not upload the files again. They can be undeleted once this is sorted out.
I am not a member of the VRT, but I'm an admin; I'm going to try to get as far through this as we can without involving VRT (because they are always backlogged). Then I'll give you solid next steps.
I presume this is about:
I see that none of those ever got as far as having a ticket number. You say the photographer "completed the wizard". Do you know whether she sent the email? If she sent it, did she ever get any acknowledgment, even an auto-generated acknowledgment, that it had been received? - Jmabel ! talk 02:34, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel: Thank you for your help with this. I do not know exactly what she did. I gave her instructions about providing consent, and then she texted that she completed it. Evidently, she missed a step, or didn't send the email. Now, she said she tried again with the wizard, but the photos don't come up. I'm assuming that's because they've been deleted, so I need to determine what to do to allow her to provide consent. Kstrine320 (talk) 17:32, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Kstrine320: If there was an automatic reply, there may be an unlabeled ticket number in that reply, maybe 16 or 17 digits long; can you or she find such?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:05, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Kstrine320: I don't know why this failed for her. I just tried using the Wizard with the filenames above and it works fine for me. Offhand, I can think of five ways this can be addressed, any of which would be fine:
  • Try again, because it should work.
  • If the email is in her "sent" folder, she can just send it again, to the address indicated in COM:VRT.
  • Fill out the Wizard using example.jpg in lieu of the proper file names, then edit in the names of the three files I mentioned here before sending.
  • Copy-paste from Commons:Volunteer Response Team#Email message template for release of rights to a file, with appropriate choices and filling in the blanks.
  • You can do one of the above yourself, send her the draft and have her send it from her email account.
In any case, I would suggest to you that you ask her to cc you, so that this time you are in the loop and can see what is going on. - Jmabel ! talk 00:31, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

OUT OF SCOPE???

Out of scope: unused images of religious/esoteric topics, mostly figures of people meditating.

Leben is a form of probiotic yoghurt, which is different from Kefir, Acidophilus, Bulgaricum, Bifido etc.
If people think that all yogurts are the same, then they are misinformed. Bondigoldwiki (talk) 05:55, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Why use AI when you could take an actual photo of Leben Yoghurt? Personal artwork is not in scope per COM:SCOPE. Abzeronow (talk) 06:00, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I did do that with the leben, and I edited the image but it was declined due to copyright. So I went to PLAN B. Bondigoldwiki (talk) 06:03, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
File:The ultimate goal of meditation.jpg
Hi, One of the main goals of meditation is "enlightenment" - but HOW do you portray that in an image?
The second image "Be careful where you meditate.jpg" is because over the last 50++ years I have met people who go off to remote and dangerous places to meditate (including 1 guy who went into the jungle in India and never came out), so I want people to think about their own safety instead of think that God will save them (which sadly I have met many people who think like this). Bondigoldwiki (talk) 06:08, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Bondigoldwiki,
File:Be careful where you meditate.jpg shows a woman in a forest, meditating on a big rock in the middle of a stream, realistic art style, with a tiger's head poking out from behind a tree. It's almost comedy, but not quite. The image is too busy to illustrate the danger. I'd say skip the AI and lean into it. Make it a cartoon, give the tiger a bib, knife and fork and make the tiger drool. And then actually use the image on a meditation guide.
Hi, One of the main goals of meditation is "enlightenment" - but HOW do you portray that in an image?
I'm not sure you can, as it's a state of mind. So maybe that's forcing a square peg in a round hole. I didn't even realize that's what File:The ultimate goal of meditation.jpg was supposed to portray. I think I'd go with a photo of a Buddhist monk, meditating at dawn with closed eyes and a faint smile. I'm 1 Buddhist monk short to take such a picture.
because over the last 50++ years
You've been meditating for over 50 years yet the potential deletion of some AI images on the internet clearly gets your goat. I'm from a different generation, in my language we say: "chill bro" - Alexis Jazz ping plz 15:34, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi, My goat is upset because I got conflicting messages which were not as clear as I would like to see, for example.
I click the link and I go to a page with dozens of other topics which are not related to me and I did not see the relevance of clicking in the first place.
Plus I have been working online for almost 30 years and ambiguity is rampant and annoying to anyone who understands how precious time is.
When I said I have been meditating, I did not say that I was enlightened, but I have met people who are including the Dalai Lama and Sai Baba et al.
ON TOP of that you have wikipedia where many alternate "links" (subjects) are rubbished as pseudo-science and false information and even outright derogatory inclusions.
So I am just being cautious.
Hope this helps

Another point is that I get a request to TALK to someone and I go to the https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Signatures page and there is 600 pages of information instead of a simple LINK to the person who made the request.
Regarding ambiguity, I got an email from you and clicked the link and then I saw this in BOLD BIG letters.

Alexis, there is 1 other thing you should know.
In 2023 I fell forward and hit my head, got knocked out and then smashed my head on the concrete (cement) floor.
I was in hospital for 3 months and the doctors all said that I would be the village idiot for the rest of my life because of the brain damage I suffered.
I have used herbal medicines and minerals to rebuild my "brain" to the point that I am now able to be at least 80% functional compared to before my accident.
This event (somehow) also affected my personality - and my most beautiful wife persisted in helping me heal and support me during this time.
I am not offering this as an excuse for my behavior, only that the me in 2026 (Jan) is different from the me in (JAN) 2023.
But I am still working on improving.
++ It can get very frustrating knowing that you know something but you cannot remember what it is.

For the Leben yoghurt, you should find a cup with a label that is mostly text. You can also find an angle and/or use bokeh to ensure any graphics on the label are not visible or out of focus. See for example File:Tomato soup in a can pull open top.jpg (soup can where the graphic on the label is out of focus) and File:Tomato soup in a can ingredient list.jpg (side of the soup can without graphics or creative text, just a list of ingredients). - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:26, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is that OK?
Thank you Bondigoldwiki (talk) 09:55, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Bondigoldwiki, File:Leben Yoghurt 500g.jpg doesn't look like a photo.
I meant find an actual cup of yoghurt in a store with a mostly-text label and take a real photo using a real camera or smartphone camera, taking care to keep any graphics on the label out of the shot or out of focus. Please stop using AI.

@Bondigoldwiki: your sentence "So I went to PLAN B." is telltale. Please take note of Commons:CARES, you can't use generative AI software to circumvent limitations resulting from copyrights. That would cause problems with either the intellectual property of the original designers of any model of the depiction or conflict with the Commons:Project scope, which basically says that random phantasies (be they produced by software or humans) are not within the purview of Commons' project aims.
There are motifs and subjects that simply are nigh impossible to capture in an image and hence to illustrate. Enlightenment and philosophical topics are certainly chief candidates for such "un-illustratable" topics. We simply have to put up with such limitations in our redactional Wikimedia work.
On to something else. If I understood the implications of some postings above, English may not be your, Bondigoldwiki's, mother tongue. It is the official policy that Commons is multilingual, so please(!) feel confident in using whatever language suits you best, that must not be the unofficial lingua franca English. At least for the languages with large communities of maternal speakers (e.g. the European ones, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, standard Arabic and likely also Hebrew), there are active contributors around who can serve as interpreters. May I ask WHY am I dealing with 4 or 5 people and repeating myself?
PLAN B was because I tried to use an EDITED image and your system declined my post, so in order to INFORM the public of another probiotic called LEBEN, I had an image generated WHICH BTW was NOT to circumvent anything.
The AI generated image was a stand-alone image and NOT based on any image that I uploaded so I do NOT see the issue with copyright that you are suggesting???
IF this image was illegal, then WHY is there an AI category in the submission form?
REQUEST
Can I just work with 1 person instead of the entire company?
Thank you Bondigoldwiki (talk) 06:41, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
The Wikimedia world is not a company with individual customer service desk representatives taking charge of or getting assigned to any individual. Every Wikimedian as you, I or the other participants on this page are has the same rights and duties while responding to inquiries. So, you cannot expect that responders stay the same, any Wikimedian who feels inclined to write something is free to do so.
I strongly suggest that you familiarise yourself with the Commons:Policies and guidelines, especially COM:SCOPE, COM:Licensing, COM:Derivative works and "what Commons is not".
This media repository here, Commons, suffers a lot from copyright violations (short: copyvio) that are uploaded by users who don't observe for whatever reason the copyright emphasis placed upon contributions. Thus, there are several procedures in place to deal with unwanted stuff, unwanted as copyvios or because the media don't fit within the project's aims (per COM:SCOPE). These procedures can be (semi-)automatic or human controlled redactional steps, it looks like at least some of your uploads were put into a human-controlled working queue, the deletion process (info: COM:DR).
Going on, about AI. The current generative software (example: en:Stable diffusion, or DALL-E, ChatGPT, etc.) is software that is based upon a HUGE heap of data, especially texts and also imagery. You can basically assume that e.g OpenAI's servers (the ChatGPT maker) have gulped down basically the whole internet, as long as it was text. Our of that data heap, the algorithms distilled statistical relationships between words and sentences, so that the software knows in a probabilistic way what words stand close together, enabling it to emulate human speech. The same holds true for imagery, there, the statistical models describe what colour values are expected for neighbouring pixels. Further reading: en:Large Language Model (LLM for short).
Any such LLM can be prompted to make an output, a copy of actual copyrighted works, there are papers out which demonstrate that the tested LLM will reliably reproduce novels like Harry Potter. This is due to a technique used besides statistics and probabilities, replicating human memorization - and the prominent LLM all have been trained with copyrighted material. Meta for instance was caught torrenting the complete assets of en:Anna's Archive, and IIRC Anthropic saved copies of pirated e-books for training their model "Claude". Roundabout a dozen cases went to court, judgements will come on in due time. This is the explanation why AI generated imagery is problematic on Commons on copyright grounds.
On the other hand, yes, there's an option to declare AI-made media in the upload form. Several jurisdictions mandate human creators, so software or animals can't claim copyrights. So, as long as no copyrighted model of and for an image to be uploaded here can be recognised, copyrights aren't a reason to refuse putting AI generated media into Commons - but these media must still comply with other rules, especially SCOPE!
The actual case of some yoghurt imagery would have been problematic on several grounds:
- Copyrights, the AI is likely to have learned the design from the actual product, so it's possible that its output is infringing upon intellectual property rights or people working for the yoghurt maker.
- Project scope, if the AI made a boilerplate yoghurt image. Such imagery has no educational value, as it's somewhat distant from reality (an AI phantasy), personal artwork or easily replaceable with actual photography.
- Being an abuse of Commons, per COM:NOT. Your answers hint at the existence of some pecuniary motivation like advertising some item, one can assume that a conflict of interests is present.
I hope that these explanations with a bit more details are helpful to you. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 07:40, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have had 4 people contact me about the same image. Bondigoldwiki (talk) 09:33, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Pls read my previous comment response regarding why I added this version of LEBEN.
There is NO other version like this, I gave the AI specific instructions and it produced a NON copyright container of leben,
How can there be copyright is there is NO copyright and summising that there MAY BE is a hypothetical - like the world is flat or the moon might be made of cheese.
There is NO copyright infringement, I looked at dozens of images before I asked google to make me a unique version of leben @ 600 grams. As per my declared statement when I posted this image. If it bothers you so much then just delete the bloody thing, this is tedious arguing about what might have been if it could have been when it may have been but it wasn't.
I am sure that you guys must gave more important things to worry about instead of sending me 10 pages of stuff you already sent me.

@Thegpoorg: "no copyrights we have for those" is not very clear; if there is some language you write better than English, do feel free to use it (or to try putting your remarks in more than one language).
If what you mean by "no copyrights we have for those" is that the photographs are copyrighted and you do not own the copyrights, then we would need a license from the person who does own the copyright. No one else can grant a license.
If what you mean by "no copyrights we have for those" is that the photographs are not copyrighted, you would need to be able to explain why they are not copyrighted; that is an unusual situation, since in most countries on earth, photographs are automatically copyrighted when they are created, and that copyright typically lasts until 70 years after the death of the photographer. There are exceptions, but in most countries, almost all photographs from the last 70 years, and even many photographs that are well over 100 years old, are still copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 00:42, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Downloading images

[edit]

Hi,

I'm currently writing a dissertation and I want to test a hypothesis using images on Wikimedia Commons. I'd like to download 1000 random photographs under Category:Love. I can compile a python script to do so, is this something I could do with a bot account or is it something that would not be allowed? Hiding (talk) 18:23, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hiding, you don't need a bot account for read-only operations. However, please limit how often your bot makes a request as to not cause a spike in server load. Pausing for 5 seconds after each request is plenty. If you don't need full-size images, consider downloading thumbnails instead. Links that may interest you: PagePile and PetScan. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:38, 31 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your help, thumbnails work perfectly for me and I'll limit to 6 seconds to be safe. Have a great day! Hiding (talk) 10:44, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Doppelte Kategorie

[edit]

Hallo!

Overwriting is a complicated matter; often we want both images, e.g.
  • there might be different decisions about colors
  • the generally less good version of something may be an accurate record of what is held by some particular archive.
There really are good reasons we no longer let most users overwrite content they didn't upload. We aren't exactly sure of the error rate we got, but it was certainly over 20% and might have approached 50%. You are bit short of the point where it would be appropriate to ask for the Commons:Patrol#Autopatrol right that would let you do this; the usual bar is 500 non-trivial edits.
As for the categories: they are not particularly well named, but Category:Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'ille de Java is an 1880 edition of the work, whereas Category:Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java is an 1863 edition. I'll start a CfD to get this better sorted out, it looks like there may be at least one error in a choice of parent category as well. - Jmabel ! talk 01:22, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for helping me with this issue. I was not aware of the fact that keeping multiple versions of the same artwork is desired.
However, the images in Category:Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de l'ille de Java originate in the Biodiversity Heritage Library and they also provide jp2 files of the same scan with a significantly higher resolution. Do you think that these files would be of value for Wikimedia Commons? Do you think that jp2 files should generally be converted to png to prevent quality loss in comparison to jpg or is this just an unnecessary duplicate?
Maybe you can have a look at my previous edits since I am afraid to have caused trouble in Category:Flowering Plants and Ferns of New South Wales and on files like File:Muehlenbeckia adpressa - Curtis.jpg or File:Coccoloba pubescens PDold.jpg (just examples) by overwriting the majority of files with scans from apparently different archives. I want to point out that uploading and cropping all of these files was a lot of work so I would like you to not immediately revert my edits.
I am deeply sorry for causing so much trouble. Cuello de pepino (talk) 08:28, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

I would have to say: the person who made that video is either seriously ignorant of how Commons works, or pretending to be ignorant of how Commons works. Certainly 999real is not a flack for the Iranian regime. He is uploading available free-licensed material. If the government of Iran is making such material available, and no one else involved is doing so, that is not under our control.
Further: yes, Tasmin is banned by the English-language Wikipedia as a source for encyclopedia articles. That has literally nothing to do with whether they are allowed a source for photographs on Commons. About the only reason Commons bans a source is that they launder copyrights to the extent that we cannot trust the validity of any license they would issue. Even an organization where the bulk of what they put out is repugnant tracts that fall outside of our scope can still be a valid source for (for example) photos of their own leadership, or a meeting that they hosted. - Jmabel ! talk 21:50, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
A devious photo from Tasnim.

Bahmanja, ah, okay. To summarize the clip, guy talks about searching Commons for Iran protests 2026 sorted by recency and finding only pictures from news agencies controlled by the Iranian government. He ends by saying "stunningly, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons not only have done nothing about this, they don't even know it's going on"
Actually we do know. There's a simple reason for this: they release all their media with a free license. These are photos taken by professional photographers which we are generally happy to have when they are freely licensed and meet COM:SCOPE. So they get uploaded here. As of right now, his statement is no longer true as the most recent uploads right now come from Category:Photos from Vahid Online, Category:Photos from Mamlekate and a few others. But government sources could be the most recent again tomorrow.
Even I uploaded a few photos from Tasnim a few years ago. Doesn't mean anything. If those with Starlink access license their content freely, we'll be more than happy to host it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:11, 1 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Alexis for clarification. I understand the logic behind this site now. /* Am I allowed to post pictures of myself WhiteslaveJames (talk) 01:42, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Would a personal photograph of you have an educational purpose? Commons is not social media. COM:SCOPE has details on these matters. Abzeronow (talk) 01:46, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Typically, no. (1) Copyright normally belongs to the photographer, so other than selfies, you'd need to demonstrate that you had properly acquired the copyright of the photos. (2) If you non-trivial activities on Commons or one our WMF sister projects, you are allowed a small number of (appropriately licensed) personal files for use on your own talk page, but otherwise personal files are out of scope. It looks like you have only a couple of edits, well below the (loose) threshold. (3) In the unlikely event that there is a Wikipedia article about you or something else that establishes significant notability, that would be a different matter. For example, we were very happy to have this selfie by author and translator Caraid O'Brien. - Jmabel ! talk 05:41, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Questions

[edit]

Hi, I started to doubt whether these picture1 and 2 are genuinely from the author's own work or not. What should I do in this situation? Camilasdandelions (talk) 11:55, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Camilasdandelions: Hi, For each file, you can open a discussion for deletion (for example by clicking the link "nominate for deletion" from the description page of the file), where you specify clearly the reasons for your doubts. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:15, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question about licensing for a news photo

[edit]

Hello. I found a photo related to the tribute to Yeison Jiménez on the website Prensa Libre, credited to AFP [2]. I cannot locate the original on AFP's website. Could you advise if it is possible to upload this image to Commons under a free license, or if it is likely protected and uploading is not permitted? Thank you. Shiningr3ds (talk) 16:01, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Shiningr3ds: I'm not aware of any contemporary content from AFP being free-licensed or PD. Do you have any reason to think this would be, or was this just a shot in the dark? - Jmabel ! talk 23:02, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
It was indeed just a shot in the dark, as I could not locate the original AFP source to check its licensing status. I will not upload it. Thanks for the answer. Shiningr3ds (talk) 03:36, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Pdf with description

I was wondering if I can make a pdf of each photograph session as individual pieces? Like giving descriptions and interesting facts? Or you should just upload and you guys decide. Katrinakatya (talk) 19:36, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Adding photos to Wikipedia

[edit]

my great uncle Thomas Xenakis is in Wikipedia. Would like to add his photo and his Olympic medal that he won in the first modern Olympics in 1896 Athens Greece, please advise Stevie2020 (talk) 12:26, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Who took those photos? Ruslik (talk) 14:05, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I did, medals were taken by me, my great Uncles photo was a photo with my Mom in 1921 when she got married Stevie2020 (talk) 15:05, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Pasted from duplicate post below, for clarity:
My great Uncle Thomas Xenakis is in Wikipedia Gymnast for first modern Olympics 1896, Athens. He won two Silver Medals, wish to post them with his photo..the photos are down loaded, just need help in adding them to Wikipedia. Stevie2020 (talk) 15:30, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi, and welcome - thank you for uploading File:Thomas Xenakis Gymnast.jpg! I have added it on Wikidata, now it is replicated on any of the wikipedia sites that uses the Wikidata Infobox. For more information about adding images, there is a tutorial on English wikipedia en:Help:Introduction_to_images_with_Wiki_Markup/1 that may be helpful. A small note - on the file of your great uncle, can you change the "date" to whenever you estimate the photograph was taken (it was not taken today) and for author: it is not you who took the photo, but maybe there are details of the photographer on the back? Otherwise, put "unknown". Thank you. -- Deadstar (msg) 16:10, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
More precisely, put {{unknown|author}}. - Jmabel ! talk 19:58, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

letter from author

[edit]

Over 50 years ago I received a short letter from now deceased author Walter R Brooks, author of Freddy the pig books. It deserves posting on the Freddy the pig article but you are inquiring whether I have the right to do so. Also, how can I rotate it 90 degrees so it is easily read? Thanks! JohnRBrauer (talk) 14:48, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@JohnRBrauer: I see you've already uploaded before asking. Of course rotation to the correct angle is welcome (I'll take care of that), but it is certainly still copyrighted in the United States. According to the Hirtle chart, any currently unpublished work with a known author who has a known death date remains copyrighted for 70 years after that death date (and through the calendar year: works don't age out of U.S. copyright mid-year). So I will have to delete that for now, and it will be restored at the beginning of 2029. To undelete it any sooner, you'd need to track down Brooks's heirs and get a license from them (see COM:THIRD for more on this). Yes, in 2029 it would probably be a welcome addition to the article, but that is (or will be) for people at the English-language Wikipedia to decide. - Jmabel ! talk 20:10, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your kind attention. I hope I am able to add it in 2029, when I turn 86. JohnRBrauer (talk) 00:16, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@JohnRBrauer: I'm younger (but not much younger, and devoured those books in third grade). Don't worry about the file, it is marked to be undeleted on 1 January 2029; at worst it would be a few days later if there is a large tranche to undelete. - Jmabel ! talk 05:17, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@JohnRBrauer: You can upload an image of the signature if you want. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:13, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Upload a PDF

[edit]

18:02, 6 February 2026: ScottWKillen (talk | contribs) triggered an abuse filter, performing the action "upload" on File:Seawar Game Instructions.pdf. Actions taken: Disallow; Filter description: Prevent uploads of PDF files by new users

I received a PDF abuse filter lockout when uploading a game description for a game that I authored and published through CompuServe. I have two PDF files that are wholly my own work and can be viewed at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YCUAplzKFU6PvVLVyirZ78t70lgk3me3/view?usp=sharing and at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zXYzdo7NvS3P4KXVp_ivaIZE2aTZ_dba/view?usp=sharing

I will license them as Attribution-ShareAlike.

Can someone help me get these files into my area of the Wikimedia Commons for an article I am authoring as a citation? Thank you very much. ScottWKillen ScottWKillen (talk) 22:28, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@ScottWKillen: We restricted PDF uploads for new users due to the problematic files often uploaded by new users. To be able to upload a PDF file, you need to be autoconfirmed, which is granted automatically to accounts that are at least 4 days old. I recommend just simply waiting out those 4 days to be able to upload PDFs. HyperAnd [talk] 23:44, 7 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
In any case, uploading a PDF to Commons does nothing to make it more citeable in the English-language Wikipedia (or any other Wikipedia that I'm aware of). At most it provides a convenience link. - Jmabel ! talk 05:19, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Is this a photograph or illustration?

[edit]

Is File:The century book of gardening; a comprehensive work for every lover of the garden (1900) (20563287676).jpg a photograph or illustration? Based on other images in the book [3] it could be a photograph, but I'm unsure. Tæppa (talk) 03:42, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Tæppa: It's halftoned, so there is no way to know the medium of the original definitively, but most likely a photogrpaph. - Jmabel ! talk 05:25, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Categories in Commons

[edit]

Are categories created in Commons stored as folders in Commons server..? --~2026-85894-2 (talk) 04:42, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

The short answer is "no." - Jmabel ! talk 05:26, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Then how are numerous media files categorized in the server? All kept/hosted together..? --~2026-85135-5 (talk) 06:03, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you want the technical details, see wikitech:Media_storage
To summarize: media files aren't grouped by category at the storage level at all. They're stored based on hash-based sharding, purely for performance reasons. The categories and other metadata you see on a filepage are to help humans keep things categorized, but they don't impact how the media files themselves are stored on the backend. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 07:32, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

How do I challenge speedy deletion of my file

[edit]

I received a warning message on my talk page saying that my file was tagged for deletion and demanded a proof that the author agreed to license the file under the given license, but I am the author. How do I rescue my file from deletion? And how do I challenge the speedy deletion? Super ninja2 (talk) 15:18, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Super ninja2: I suspect that TonySt tagged like that because you've written both "as illustrated by David Rohde" and "Author: Super ninja2". So one might ask whether David Rohde and Super ninja2 are the same person, and if not how much of the content of the file is by each of them. I think the "proper" way to contest this would be to edit the file description page to answer that question and then click "Challenge speedy deletion" to convert the speedy deletion request into a slower contested one. --bjh21 (talk) 15:30, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Dave Dawson128: Hi, and welcome. The steps in order are: 1) Become famous; 2) someone at a reliable source will write and publish an article about you; and 3) someone else will write about you on Wikipedia. Note that we do not accept biographies, and Wikipedia doesn't accept autobiographies; see COM:NOT and en:WP:AUTO for details. @Stevie2020: The same way you uploaded File:Thomas Xenakis Gymnast.jpg. You are not allowed to upload while editing on Wikipedia yet; you may request COM:AP at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to do that. You have also triggered Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg images as a new user; see COM:HR. In addition, please stop making new sections here about the same issue; new sections are a pain to deal with, and you can just add to the existing section.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:36, 8 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
